From June 8 to September 22, 2024, the Antwerp Handelsbeurs will host a unique family exhibition on James Ensor. It is 75 years ago this year that we said goodbye to James ENSOR, but in Antwerp the avant-garde artist lives on. This educational and wacky hands-on exhibition for children about the life of Ensor - one of Belgium's greatest artists - is based on the children's book of the same name "Great Art for Little Connoisseurs" by Thaïs Vanderheyden.

Thaïs Vanderheyden introduces children to the greatest masterpieces of painting in a humorous and approachable way. She repaints the most famous works of art and turns them into junior parodies. Besides that funny version, of course, the original work is shown and an anecdotal story is told about the painting, painter, subject or style. Tens of thousands of children have visited the funny exhibitions of Great Art for Little Connoisseurs and this summer it is Antwerp's turn!

During this expo, the hermit creature Arno will take you on a time travel through the colorful life of this amazing artist. In addition, children can search for James Ensor's masks in the hands-on section of the expo.

Practical info

- The expo runs from June 8 through Sept. 22, 2024. From Monday to Saturday, the expo is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. On Sundays, the expo is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

- Children under 5 years of age receive free admission to the expo.

- The average visit duration for this do-expo is 50 minutes. In addition, take time to enjoy the beautiful neo-Gothic architecture of Handelsbeurs Antwerpen, the oldest stock exchange building in the world. Visitors to the Ensor exhibition will have the unique opportunity to admire the entire second floor of the restored monument - which is not normally open to the public.

Be enchanted by the world of James Ensor and make this summer an
artistic adventure for the whole family!
